It seems to me that they are missing the big picture or at least the foresight to realize that this won't be that effective. This bill would require that all new semi-automatic hand guns be equipped with a tiny microstamp on the end of the firing pin that will stamp the shell casing with identifying characters.
While a good initial idea in theory, they are missing some very important points.
1. Criminals will just file the firing pin.
2. Criminals could just pick up like caliber shell casings at their local range, and have plenty to scatter around to throw off the police. Sending them knocking on John Q Innocent's front door with a vengeance.
3. Changing the firing pin takes about 10 minutes.
Now this might catch some dumbass offenders but the ones with half a brain will easily skirt this detection method, and it will just end up costing the responsible gun owners more of their hard earned money, and not prevent any gun crime.
